The makers of so-called electronic cigarettes….which have been marketed as a safer alternative to smoking…are now being challenged by federal health officials.

Manufacturers have claimed the products don’t contain the same hazardous cocktail of cancer-causing chemicals…

But an FDA test of more than a dozen of the devices turned up cancer-causing ingredients and other toxins…including a key ingredient found in anti-freeze.

Food and Drug Administration officials also say the quality control process for these faux-cigarettes in some cases is non-existent.

Electronic cigarettes aren’t covered by federal tobacco laws…making it difficult for the FDA to regulate sales.

The agency managed to seize 50 shipments of the products since last summer…
But the manufacturers have challenged the government’s efforts in court.

The FDA isn’t saying whether it will take action against the companies that makes the toxic e-cigarettes.
