Electronic cigarettes are not harmless. Hundreds of vaping-related respiratory illnesses have been reported in several states. Often marketed to youth and pregnant women, e-cigarettes have been shown by UC Riverside scientists to damage brain stem cells. UCR researchers have also found that some flavor chemicals, such as cinnamaldehyde and ethyl maltol, are cytotoxic (toxic to living cells).
